Key Ingredients and How They Work

Collapsible content

Toluene-2,5-Diamine Sulfate (PTDS)

Toluene-2,5-Diamine Sulfate is an oxidative hair-dye intermediate primarily used in permanent and demi-permanent hair-color formulations. It is not itself the final color; instead, it reacts with other dye precursors in the presence of an oxidizing agent, typically hydrogen peroxide, to form larger colored molecules inside the hair fiber. This process allows the color to penetrate the hair cortex and provides relatively durable color and good gray coverage. It is particularly useful for developing brown, dark, and natural-looking shades. Compared with some traditional dye intermediates, it may be used in formulations designed to provide effective color with controlled oxidative processing. However, aromatic amines such as this ingredient can cause skin sensitization and allergic contact dermatitis in susceptible people. A patch or allergy test according to the product manufacturer's instructions is therefore important before use, and the ingredient should be used only within applicable regulatory limits.

m-Aminophenol

m-Aminophenol (3-aminophenol) is an aromatic amine and oxidative hair-color precursor. It functions as a coupling component that reacts with other dye intermediates during oxidation to generate colored molecules. Depending on the combination and concentration of other precursors, it can contribute red, violet, brown, and other tonal characteristicsto the final hair color. Its ability to participate in oxidative coupling reactions makes it useful for creating complex, natural-looking shades rather than simply producing a single color. It is particularly valuable in professional and consumer hair-color systems where precise tonal adjustment is required. Because it is chemically reactive and belongs to the family of aromatic dye intermediates, it can cause irritation or allergic sensitization in some individuals.

p-Aminophenol

p-Aminophenol (4-aminophenol) is another important oxidative hair-dye intermediate used to develop permanent hair color. When mixed with an oxidizing agent, it participates in reactions with other dye precursors, forming larger colored molecules that become retained within the hair shaft. It is particularly useful for producing brown, red, copper, and natural-looking tonal effects, depending on the overall dye system. Its inclusion can help achieve depth, intensity, and balanced color development. Since the final color is created through chemical reactions between several ingredients, p-Aminophenol is generally not responsible for the finished shade by itself. As with other oxidative dye intermediates, it may cause irritation or allergic contact dermatitis, particularly in sensitized individuals.

Resorcinol

Resorcinol is an aromatic compound commonly used as a coupler in oxidative hair-color formulations. Rather than acting as the final pigment, it reacts with oxidized primary dye intermediates to form larger, colored molecules. This coupling reaction helps generate specific brown, dark, neutral, and tonal shades and contributes to the complexity and durability of the final hair color. Resorcinol is particularly useful because different combinations of primary intermediates and couplers can produce a wide range of shades. It also helps formulate colors capable of covering gray hair effectively. However, it can cause skin irritation and sensitization in some individuals, so appropriate precautions and regulatory limits are important when using products containing it.

Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour

Avena Sativa Kernel Flour is finely milled material obtained from oat kernels and is included in personal-care products primarily for its soothing, conditioning, moisturizing, and protective properties. Oats contain beta-glucans, proteins, lipids, starches, and various phenolic compounds. Beta-glucans can help attract and retain moisture, while oat lipids and proteins contribute to conditioning and skin-softening effects. In hair and scalp products, it can help improve the feel of the hair and provide a comforting effect to the scalp. In skincare, it is particularly useful in formulations intended for dry, sensitive, or easily irritated skin. Its relatively gentle nature makes oat-derived ingredients common in cleansing products, creams, masks, shampoos, and scalp-care formulations. Individuals with an oat allergy or sensitivity should nevertheless exercise caution.

Panthenol

Pro-vitamin B5, a humectant and soothing agent. It draws in and holds moisture, softens skin and hair, calms irritation and redness, and supports barrier repair and wound healing, leaving surfaces smooth and comforted.

Castor Seed Oil

Castor Seed Oil, commonly known as castor oil, is a vegetable oil obtained from the seeds of Ricinus communis. It is unusual among common plant oils because it contains a high proportion of ricinoleic acid, a hydroxylated fatty acid that contributes to its characteristic thick, viscous texture. In cosmetics, castor oil functions primarily as an emollient, hair-conditioning agent, skin-conditioning agent, and formulation aid. It coats and lubricates the hair surface, helping hair feel softer and appear smoother and shinier. On skin, it helps reduce the sensation of dryness by providing an occlusive/emollient layer. Its relatively thick consistency can also improve the richness and texture of creams, conditioners, lip products, and hair treatments. The oil itself should not be confused with ricin, a highly toxic protein associated with the raw castor seed; properly processed cosmetic castor oil does not serve as a source of ricin.

Olive Fruit Oil

Olive Fruit Oil, commonly called olive oil, is obtained from the fruit of Olea europaea. It is rich in fatty acids, particularly oleic acid, and contains minor components such as squalene, tocopherols, and phenolic compounds. In cosmetic formulations, it functions primarily as an emollient and skin- and hair-conditioning agent. It helps lubricate the skin, reduce the feeling of dryness, and leave the surface softer and smoother. In hair-care products, olive oil can help improve slip, softness, manageability, and shine, particularly in products designed for dry or coarse hair. Its antioxidant constituents can also contribute to the protection of the oil itself from oxidation. The quality and composition of olive oil can vary according to its source, processing, and refining.

Ceramide NP

The most abundant skin ceramide (also called Ceramide 3). It restores the lipid barrier, keeps skin hydrated by preventing water loss, and improves barrier function, leaving skin smoother and more comfortable.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract and Allantoin are soothing, healing actives that calm and comfort the skin. Aloe delivers hydration, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory relief, easing redness and irritation while supporting skin repair. Allantoin promotes cell regeneration, softens and smooths skin, and speeds healing of dry, damaged, or irritated areas. Together they soothe sensitivity, boost moisture, and improve skin texture—making them ideal for calming, restorative, and after-sun formulations.
